Cynthia Lee Terry, CNE MSN CCRN RN, is Associate Professor of Nursing at Lehigh Carbon Community College, as well as a certified Critical Care Nurse. The author of the best-selling LPN to RN Transitions, Prof. Terry is well-known for her ability to guide students through complicated nursing subjects.

Aurora L. Weaver, MSN, M.Ed, RN, CNE is an experienced educator whose past positions have included Assistant Professor at Lehigh Carbon Community College in Schnecksville, PA; Medical-Surgical Chairperson at St. Luke’s Hospital, School of Nursing, in Bethlehem, PA; Director of Nursing at Northampton College, also in Bethlehem, and Director of Nursing at Bucks County Community College, in Newtown, PA.

Make Critical Care make sense

This book is spectacular. I studied far more from this book than my lecture notes or my textbooks during my critical care course and I consistently did better on tests than my classmates. This books breaks down everything from EKG interpretation to ABG's so clearly that you cannot get lost. These are very helpful tables of common medications that you will run into. Step by step procedures and diagrams of the equipment so you can really figure out how things work. I couldn't have passed critical care without it!

Not so good...

Arrived it perfect condition and shipping was quick. The text is easy to read and gives an overall picture of each organ system. It breaks it down into basic anatomy, common critical care meds, disease processes that are seen with that organ system and what to do when your patient is not doing so hot. Downside is that there is LOTS of errors in this book. I used it for my critical care class in nursing school and the teacher said she would never use it again because it was wrong or didn't cover important issues on many occasions.

About the Author

Sasha Petraske opened Milk & Honey, a speakeasy cocktail bar in New York, in 2000. He later had ventures in New York, London, and Australia. Sasha and his bars won numerous competitions and awards. He lived in New York until his untimely death in 2015. His wife, New York-based Georgette Moger-Petraske, is a spirits writer.

Elegiac and Delicious

No name-dropping, no star f-cking.

If those words carry meaning for you, then so too do the drink recipes in this book. If not yet, for the reader of this book they soon will. Here, at last, is Milk & Honey resurrected on the page. One can, if they were lucky, recall the short, candlelit bar and the quiet excitement of ducking in off of a Chinatown street and being served essentially the perfect drink for whatever your palate in what was the most exciting bar in the world during its time. The book is not just Milk & Honey, of course. It is Little Branch and the John Dory Oyster Bar and Dutch Kills and White Star and everywhere he touched and everyone he worked with gathered up in a collection of recipes and elegiac words.
Sasha Petraske left the world too young, but as an old soul he left behind an entire culture of service and drink preparation that lives on in his many acolytes. This book collects, essentially, the favorite recipes of Sasha and those who worked with and for him, each introduced with a short paragraph explaining the drinks background and meaning and seasonality. The framing idea of the book is the framing idea of mixology as Sasha and his ventures expressed it: every cocktail is a variation of one of five types of drinks: the Old Fashioned, the Martini or Manhattan, the Sour, the Highball, or the Fix. There are five chapters of recipes he enjoyed (largely designed by his acolytes or developed in concert with him, and attributed appropriately) with an additional chapter on non alcoholic and sweeter large format drinks. The recipes reflect the elegance and simplicity that Mr. Petraske stressed: unlike other recent bar books that seek to be the last word on all cocktail making and which call in each recipe for very specific brands, here liquors are specified by type and perhaps origin, but in the context of a simply presented list of ingredients followed by detailed instructions on assembly and only occasionally the introducing paragraph will name a particular brand. An aesthete and something of an obsessive compulsive when it came to lists, Petraske would doubtless be pleased by this layout. Each facing page contains an impressionistic line drawing of the drink that reflects the ratios called for in the recipe. Some of the great classics are here, but the recipe reflects the particular way Sasha preferred them, so too are the more famous originals of his and his extended bar family. The beginning and end of the book contains framing essays, some by Petraske but others by his wife and friends describing the philosophy of work and dress that Petraske lived and sought to impart upon others. Reflecting his particular sense of humor, cocktails for cats are also described.
You can find Petraske's work living on in his colleagues now bringing their own voice to the great bars of LA, Chicago, NYC (Attaboy, the now transformed original Milk and Honey space led by Sam Ross and Michael McIlroy), Melbourne, and London, or you can recreate these recipes at home. I think that this book will give you recipes that feel both familiar and surprisingly new at the same time, the kind you would get when you let a great bartender who knows what you love make a drink, bartenders choice. While Petraske is missed, this book is not to be.

Forty years ago, Israeli psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky wrote a series of breathtakingly original studies undoing our assumptions about the decision-making process. Their papers showed the ways in which the human mind erred, systematically, when forced to make judgments in uncertain situations. Their work created the field of behavioral economics, revolutionized Big Data studies, advanced evidence-based medicine, led to a new approach to government regulation, and made much of Michael Lewis’s own work possible. Kahneman and Tversky are more responsible than anybody for the powerful trend to mistrust human intuition and defer to algorithms.

The Undoing Project is about a compelling collaboration between two men who have the dimensions of great literary figures. They became heroes in the university and on the battlefield―both had important careers in the Israeli military―and their research was deeply linked to their extraordinary life experiences. Amos Tversky was a brilliant, self-confident warrior and extrovert, the center of rapt attention in any room; Kahneman, a fugitive from the Nazis in his childhood, was an introvert whose questing self-doubt was the seedbed of his ideas. They became one of the greatest partnerships in the history of science, working together so closely that they couldn’t remember whose brain originated which ideas, or who should claim credit. They flipped a coin to decide the lead authorship on the first paper they wrote, and simply alternated thereafter.

This story about the workings of the human mind is explored through the personalities of two fascinating individuals so fundamentally different from each other that they seem unlikely friends or colleagues. In the process they may well have changed, for good, mankind’s view of its own mind.

An intellectual adventure that only Michael Lewis could do justice

Thanks to works like Psychonomics: The Scientific Conquest of the Human Mind, we know that the field of Behavioral Economics is a kind of wild west of the sciences, filled with speculation, outlaws, and not a little shenanigans. And yet it is by far the most fascinating and controversial science on the popular stage. The Undoing Project is the epic story of how it all came to be.

It is a story that only Michael Lewis could write. With his characteristic accessibility and knack for turning the complex into palatable pieces, Lewis presents the foundations of the science by crafting a story about its two visionary scholars, Daniel Kahneman and the late Amos Tversky.

In so doing, Lewis gives a face to the theories and ideas that we have all become so aware of in the last ten or fifteen years: The Anchoring Effect, Framing, Overconfidence Bias, Regression to the Mean, Halo Effect. These and other “cognitive biases” have become familiar scientific concepts. The story of the friendship between Kahneman and Tversky brings to life what could otherwise be dull and mathematical.

This book is admittedly less plot-driven than other Lewis gems like The Blind Side, The Big Short, and even Moneyball. The story of Kahneman and Tversky is not necessarily made of the big screen. And Lewis does pay attention to the math to a degree that some readers will have to skip ahead (as he suggests). Still, Lewis’ mastery of storytelling makes even this kind of material a gripping and endearing tale.

One thing that stood out to me is just how different Kahneman and Tversky were. How they came together from similar backgrounds, approached life from different angles, agreed to set off on their intellectual journey together, and collaborated on some of the greatest psychological studies of the 20th century sets us up for a classic buddy story—an intellectual Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid if you will. On second thought, it might be good for a movie after all.

4.5 stars. Absolutely wonderful. Michael Lewis successfully blends two biographies, an intellectual love story (there really is no other way to describe the Kahneman/Tversky partnership), astute sketches of the work they did (in heuristics and biases), and how the partnership had ripple effects in a myriad of areas (from economics to psychology, from medicine to the military, and beyond). The book moves at a brisk pace, never dull, and fleshes out the men behind the scientific work. This vantage point into where Kahneman and Tversky came from, the events that shaped them, their intellectual make-ups, and the alchemy of their partnership is a real treat. This added depth to the scientists only makes me appreciate their work all the more. Highly recommended for anyone, but especially those who have read Thinking Fast, And Slow, any book on behavioral economics, or students of how human cognition leads us astray. A fantastic book that I couldn't put down.

Worth a read but don't let your expectations get too high

Worth reading in an overall slow release environment for quality reads. But really quite redundant in the middle chapters. To the point of the build up to "revelations" have already been anticipated by the reader many chapters earlier. The author never really ties in his claims of disruptive innovation with enough real world examples. Leaving the reader still wondering: was this ground breaking, transformative work, or something more akin to marginal improvement in the way people should be taught to think thru alternatives.

Like a lot of "books" the content really amounts to be about 80 pages worth of material, but that's no more than a magazine series, not enough for a marketable book. So like a lot of "books" it's stretched by filling it with added information that doesn't support the central themes and plenty of redundancy. Analogous to the student dragging out his homework to reach the 500-word minimum essay
