A very nice instructive book, but a missed oppurtunity.

If I had never read an instructive tome on drawing comics before, I'm sure I would find this very impressive. Being that there are several out there already, this feels like a missed oppurtunity.
First of all, the presentation is rather lackluster. For a medium as dynamic as comic books I believe the design of the book could have been a bit more interesting. It's all fairly standard and not all thay dynamic.
Of course the content is what counts the most, and there is a lot of worthy elements presented here. The problem is most of it has already been presented in other books, like the excellent How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way. The beginning section on the history of comics is the exception. It is both interesting and useful and hasn't been done in this paticular type of book before to my knowledge. The dissapointing part is that it would have been very interesting to see how a master like Kubert creates his illustrations. We are given tantalizing tidbits, but it could have been much meatier. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the final section. We are treated to the original script for a short lived character called Ragman. We get to see the rough layouts and there are interesting, but many of the pages are reproduced at a greatly reduced size. It would have been great to see some more comments as to WHY Kubert made some of the storytelling choices he did and reproducing the actual, final pages of the story seems like a bit of a no-brainer. Alas, neither of these things are done.
Definitely buy this book if you are interested in a career in comic books. It provides a solid foundation, but it is a far cry from the seminal, complete book for aspiring comic book artists we have been waiting for.

a GREAT book on this subject

This is one of the best books on comic style art that I've ever read. Like many people, I taught myself to draw reading comic books. I do other types of art now, but sometimes I find the need to return to my roots, and I couldn't have picked a better book. If nothing else, this is a lot of fun! The only shortcoming of this book is that it covers a lot, but doesn't go into detail on everything.

I thought this book was great and helped me a great deal but, after reading other books like this it doesnt have the style and ideas that artists use today.The books ideas are rather boring and you will lose intrest if you dont like his ideas for characters. Though if you do finish this book as I have you willbe amazed at how much this book helps your drawing ability.

Pathophysiology

I think this book has been originally written for professional medical practitioners. However the book also provides a layman like me with valuable medical info concerning various ailments and diseases Reading of the book sometimes reminds me of need to look up a medical dictionary like Dorland's for some technical words but following such check-up I could grasp the content. I'd like to point out that an interesting thing aout the book is forward-positioning of Chapter 2 handling of Genetic Disease in the book composition and that the Chap 2 is followed by the section on Immune system, infectious disease and so on. I found this arrangement of chapters very interesting and very informative. Currently I'm in the middle of reading the book authored by Dr. Peter D'Adamo who is expert on blood group study. By rcross-eferring between two books, your understanding of pathophysiology will be further enhanced.,

Great book for excellent learning

Contrary to what some of the reviewers have said, this book is great for self-study. I know this from experience. It is mostly clear and logical, although there are certain parts that are frustrating because of lack of clarity. There are some examples that are confusing, and, as explained by a previous reviewer, sometimes variables are not explained in new equations.

The best thing about this book is that it has many great, easy to understand examples at varying difficulties. The graphics are excellent and this really helps sometimes. The problem sets at the end of the chapters are good. If you can do the examples and problem sets at the end of the chapters (and I know you can because the author does a wonderful job at explaining the subjects) you will find books on classical mechanics and electromagnetism to be extremely easy.

This book comes with online supplements, but you probably will not use them. They are worthless. Do not waste your time trying to use the online supplements.

UPDATE: I scored 5's (the highest possible score) on my advanced placement physics C exams(both mechanics and electricity and magnetism). I never took a course or had a teacher for this level of physics so my score must have been due to this book!

PITIFUL

The title of this book should be: "PHYSICS FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE ALREADY SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS". This is a good idea gone bad. As others have said, the Chapter Reviews, illustrations, etc are helpful and I guess this is a terrific reference book for those people who already know most of the material. BUT, for a beginning Physics student, it is maddeningly incomplete. There are plenty of examples but very little explanatory text and the examples have a REALLY BAD HABIT of SKIPPING MANY IMPORTANT STEPS. The result is that if your particular problem is not specifically one of the examples, why then, you are most likely OUT OF LUCK! After using this book it would seem that the subject of Physics has gotten so huge with information that an overview course can no longer be covered in the traditional 2 college semesters. At least that is the impression. Why else would there be so little discussion of the IDEAS BEHIND THE PROBLEMS. But, at the very least, in the examples that are covered, could not ALL THE STEPS that are required to do the problem be included? When a beginning student has to attempt to "fill in" an author's blanks, learning becomes tedious and frustrating. I'm speaking not only for myself but for many of my classmates as well. Most of them are bright, energetic science majors who are thoroughly fed-up with using this poorly written texbook.

Do NOT buy this book.

I am amazed at some of the reviews here (I'd like to ask the reviewers what they are smoking). Anyhow, I will refrain from sharing my feelings on that matter... I will instead share my views on this book. The book is CLEARLY not an introduction to physics, period. It assumes the student is exceptionally familiar with the author's frame of reference (i.e. a mind reader). Often, examples skip important connections, that, while not beyond the students intelligence, make for difficult and stressful reading. I cannot emphasize the above enough; the author knows his material, BUT does not convey it well. I have found my programing books easier and more enjoyable to read. One critical fault of the book is lack of relevancy. It seems as though the goal is to abstract the concepts beyond the care of readers. The book is lifeless. Another major problem with the book has to do with the problems. Examples in the chapter provide for the more simple and basic of ideas. The problems at the end of the chapter are leaps ahead of what has been presented. There isn't a logical next step approach to these problems; it is basically how-in-the-world can you apply what you've learn to these problems that compare like apples and oranges. In other words, "may require synthesis of concepts" is an understatement. A good professor is a MUST with this book; often, not available (and certaintly not included). I'd like to provide for a more critical review; however, I have mid-terms to study for... Hope I have successfully steared someone from wasting their time and money. P.S. Yes, the pictures are nice, but do not make up for the faults.

Johann Sebastian BACH 1685–1750

Through the autumn countryside of Germany, a young man of twenty walks briskly, soaking up the faded October sun and crunching fallen leaves underfoot. It is 1705, and the young man is on his way from Arnstadt to Lubeck—a two-hundred mile trek. The miles pass quickly as he anticipates the music he is determined to hear. One of the great organists of his day, Dietrich Buxtehude, will be performing evening musical devotions at the Cathedral this time of year, in preparation for Advent.

Traveling on foot to hear concerts was nothing new to this young organist; many times he had tramped thirty miles to Hamburg to hear the renowned organist Reincken and had even walked sixty miles to Celle to attend programs of French music. But to hear Buxtehude! For this opportunity, he needed at least a month’s leave of absence from his position as a church organist. His superiors had grudgingly consented after the organist entreated them relentlessly for the necessary leave.

Arriving at Lubeck, footsore yet charged with excitement, the young musician drinks in the organ concerts of the master with a profound sense of personal inspiration. He sends word back to his employer at Arnstadt that he needs two months off instead of just one, knowing he risks being fired.

Three years after this experience, he announces his ultimate purpose in life: to create "well-regulated church music to the glory of God." With an insatiable appetite to learn and a propensity for ceaseless work, he set about doing just that. His name was Johann Sebastian Bach. Throughout history, Bach has been acclaimed as the Christian composer, almost a kind of "patron saint" for church musicians. All around the world, he is recognized as one of the greatest composers in history. This is not to say there were no great spiritual composers before Bach; he actually represents the culmination of centuries of Christian music.

The sheer number of works he composed is staggering, however, and so is their diversity. They include chorales, cantatas, masses, oratorios, passions, concerti, and solo works for virtually every instrument of his day. Bach was prolific in other areas of life as well: He worked in a variety of demanding jobs (often with many extra-musical duties), and fathered twenty children, several of whom also matured into noted musicians.

When Johann Sebastian was born in 1685 in Eisenach, Germany, the Bach name was already synonymous with the musical trade. More than fifty musicians bearing that name are remembered by musicologists today. Even as a boy, Bach appeared eager to find expression for his emerging musical talent.

Orphaned at the age of nine, Johann moved in with an older brother, and his musical training began. He soon developed into an outstanding singer and demonstrated a remarkable ability to play the organ, the violin, and numerous other instruments. Bach’s brother owned a set of compositions, which he forbade the younger Bach to use. Perhaps because it was placed off-limits, that musical manuscript grew irresistibly attractive to the young musician.

And so for weeks, Bach stole the precious pages and hid them in his room, where he stayed up late night after night copying the musical scores by moonlight. When his brother discovered the copied pages, he angrily confiscated them. But Bach had already gleaned valuable lessons in composition, as well as discipline and devotion to music, from the clandestine exercise.

Throughout his life he was known much more as an organist than as a composer. Amazing to us, only ten of Bach’s original compositions were published during his lifetime. It was not until the nineteenth century that his brilliance as a composer was truly appreciated. Only then would he be revered by such masters as Beethoven, who claimed, "His name ought not to be Bach [Bach is the German word for brook], but ocean, because of his infinite and inexhaustible wealth of combinations and harmonies."

Like so many other masters throughout history, Bach’s personality had many facets. On one hand, he was free from personal vanity and generous and encouraging toward his many pupils. The Bach family also had a great reputation for their hospitality. His first biographer, Forkel, notes, "These sociable virtues, together with his great artistic fame, caused his house to be rarely free from visitors."

Once, when an acquaintance praised Bach’s wonderful skill as an organist, he replied with characteristic humility and wit, "There is nothing very wonderful about it. You have only to hit the right notes at the right moment and the instrument does the rest."

Yet he could be stubborn and irritable, especially with an unappreciative employer or an incompetent musician. At the age of twenty, Bach ridiculed a colleague by calling him "Kippelfagottist"—a "nanny-goat bassoonist." The offended musician picked up a stick and struck Bach, who drew his sword. A full-blown duel would have ensued, but fortunately, friends who saw the argument intensify threw themselves between the two adversaries to keep them apart.

Bach spent his entire life in Germany, working primarily as a church musician. For the two centuries prior, this region had been permeated by the legacy of Martin Luther, with his radical emphasis on a living, personal, Bible-based Christianity. Luther himself had been a musician, declaring music to be second only to the Gospel itself. Bach was to be the reformer’s greatest musical disciple.

Bach resoundingly echoed the convictions of Luther, claiming that "Music’s only purpose should be for the glory of God and the recreation of the human spirit." As he set about composing, he would frequently initial his blank manuscript pages with the marking, "J. J." (Jesu Juva—"Help me, Jesus"), or "I. N. J." (In Nomine Jesu—"In the name of Jesus"). At the manuscript’s end, Bach routinely initialed the letters "S. D. G." (Soli Deo Gloria—"To God alone, the glory"). To Bach, these were not trite religious slogans but sincere expressions of personal devotion.

A great book!

I believe that this book is an important read, because I think it's definitely in the interests of too many classical-music reviewers to more or less downplay or disregard the personal faith of so many of the classical masters. Although this book isn't exhaustive either in its information or its selection of composers documented -- which the author himself acknowledges -- and would've been better if it were longer, perhaps, yet it is still a highly recommended read.

The information is well-documented and referenced; and it was a joy, a delight, and confirmation to me, as a Christian, to read about the personal, well-documented expressions of faith from some of classical music's most talented artists, including Bach, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, and others less popular.

Thanks Mr. Kavanaugh, for the research and writing -- and why don't you release more of your own music for us classical-music fans to check out? :-)

WHAT THE SPIRITUAL LIVES OF THE GREAT COMPOSERS MEANT TO ME.

This is a wonderful look into composer's such as Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and many others about their spiritual lives. The book is well written and great research has been done on each composer. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes music, especially the classical composers. What I liked about this book was how personal the stories were about each composer. I felt like I knew them well after reading this book.

Very Informative

This is a very informative book. It went into detail summarizing the Flaxseed Oil and Cottage Cheese diet that I am following as an Alternate Cancer Treatment/Protocol. Garry Kasparov spent twenty years as the world’s #1 ranked chess player. In 2005, he retired from professional chess to lead the pro-democracy opposition against Vladimir Putin, from street protests to coalition building. He has been a contributing editor to the Wall Street Journal since 1991 and is a senior visiting fellow at the Oxford Martin School. Explaining Why Vladimir Putin Is an Ever Present Danger

It would be easy to dismiss “Winter Is Coming: Why Vladimir Putin and the Enemies of the Free World Must Be Stopped” as a polemical attack upon Vladimir Putin, but Garry Kasparov, with the assistance of Mig Greengard, has written a most thoughtful account on the history of Russian politics since the rapid decline and fall of the Soviet Union; a cautionary tale explaining how the democratic aspirations of the Russian people were derailed by uninspired leadership from Boris Yeltsin, the unlikely succession and subsequent consolidation of power by his successor Vladimir Putin, and the West’s inability in promoting democracy during Yeltin’s rule, and then, in turning a blind eye to Putin’s revival of a one-party dictatorship. “Winter Is Coming” should be viewed as required reading by politicians, bureaucrats and businessmen throughout the Free World who think we should maintain “normal” diplomatic and commercial ties with Putin’s dictatorial Russian regime. What makes “Winter Is Coming” especially compelling is in recognizing it as a notable historical overview of Russian politics in the last quarter century seen personally through the eyes of Kasparov, a notable Russian democrat and critic of Putin’s kleptocratic dictatorship. A notable critic who recognized immediately, the seismic shifts in Russian politics months, even years, before many Western diplomats, historians and political scientists. (For example, he predicted the collapse of the Soviet Union months before it occurred, offering a realistic assessment of current Soviet politics which eluded American foreign policy experts, including the likes of Brent Scowcroft and Condoleeza Rice.)

Kasparov offers us a far more realistic appraisal of Putin than historian Stephen F. Cohen, who has argued consistently that Putin is more a creature of the nomenklatura – the entrenched Soviet Union-born bureaucracy – and the powerful oligarchs controlling and manipulating Russia’s economy. Instead of this relatively passive view of Putin, we are introduced instead to a real-life Mafia don emerging from the pages of Mario Puzo’s “The Godfather” trilogy, “The Last Don”, “Omerta” and “The Sicilian”; all of which Kasparov regards as required reading for anyone wishing to understand Putin and what makes him tick:

“…..A Puzo fan sees the Putin government more accurately; a strict hierarchy, extortion, intimidation, a tough-guy image, eliminating traitors, the code of secrecy and loyalty, and, above all, a mandate to keep the revenue flowing. In other words, a mafia.”

“ As long as you are loyal to the capo, he will protect you. If one of the inner circle goes against the capo, his life his forfeit. Once Russia’s richest man, Mikhail Khordorkovsky, wanted to go straight and run his Yukos oil company as a legitimate corporation and not as another cog in Putin’s KGB Inc., he quickly found himself in a Siberian prison, his company dismantled and looted, and its pieces absorbed by the state mafia apparatus of Rosneft and Gazprom. Private companies were absorbed into the state while at the same time the assets of the state companies moved into private accounts. State and corporate power merged. It became a perverse combination of Adam Smith and Karl Marx in which the profits were privatized and the expenses were nationalized.” (pages 160 -161)

Kasparov condemns all of Ronald Reagan’s successors as President of the United States, who have consistently tried normalizing relations with Russia, instead of demanding extensive and radical reforms to promote democratic values and free market capitalism. Some of his worst criticism is aimed specifically at both George W. Bush and Barack Obama, whom he thinks missed ample opportunities to demand genuine reforms from Putin’s government, possibly discouraging it from seizing territories in neighboring Georgia and Ukraine. He also blames Russia’s first post-Soviet Union president, Boris Yeltsin, for not instituting political and economic reforms akin to those implemented by Czech playwright Vaclav Havel, who, as president of Czechoslovakia, ensured not only a peaceful dissolution of his country into the Czech Republic and Slovakia, but also the survival of democracy and free market capitalism, allowing both to become spectacular political and economic successes in post-Soviet Empire Eastern Europe. He casts ample doubt on the actions of National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden, calling into question Snowden’s asylum request, and implying that Snowden may have been aided and abetted by Putin’s KGB. Kasparov concludes by demanding that Western – and indeed, all of the Free World - political leaders try emulating the moral leadership shown by Reagan and Havel, in insisting that human rights remain the cornerstone of any diplomatic and economic overtures to the Putin regime and other newly ascendant enemies of the free world, especially ISIS in the Middle East. Kasparov thinks that when Western political leaders cease offering appeasement to the Putin regime and other dictatorships, then we may no longer fear that “Winter is Coming”.

This regrettable transformation has come to pass and lives are being lost because of it. It is cold comfort to be told ‘You were right!’. It is even less comforting when so little is being done to halt Putin’s aggression even now. What is the point of saying you should have listened and acted when you still aren’t listening and acting?” -- from Introduction to “Winter is Coming”

According to author Garry Kasparov Western appeasers with names like Bush, Merkel, Major, Chirac, Obama, Schroder, Berlusconi, Sarkozy and the International Olympic Committee have been playing ball with Russian President Vladimir Putin for 15 years now. During the term of his predecessor Boris Yeltsin there had been a short window of opportunity to introduce democratic reforms to Russia and Yeltsin’s efforts met with limited success. Unfortunately, aided and abetted by the aforementioned Western leaders Vladimir Putin has reversed course since 2000 and has fashioned a KGB police state with far-reaching consequences for his own country and for the rest of humanity. Kasparov lays out precisely how we got here from there in his hard-hitting new book “Winter Is Coming: Why Vladimir Putin and the Enemies of the Free World must be Stopped”. This is easily one of the most important books I have read in 2015.

When the Berlin Wall came tumbling down on November 9, 1989 it appeared to be a powerful symbol that evil had finally been defeated. Yet the reality was that Communism did not disappear when the Wall fell. There were still a billion people around the globe living under Communist rule. Despite the sincere efforts of Boris Yeltsin to affect change and modernize the Russian economy the hardliners in the Kremlin had no intention of giving up their control. They bided their time until Vladimir Putin took the reins of power in 2000. Putin quickly and systematically began to consolidate power. He eliminated opposition by any means necessary and co-opted the press. When Putin began to crack down Western leaders had an opportunity to push back. Instead they chose to look the other way and rewarded Putin with ever greater access to their markets. They needed the gas, oil, minerals and timber and Putin was all too happy to oblige. If there is a recurring theme in “Winter is Coming” it is this: if the West acknowledged the horrible truth then they would have to act. Sadly, the leaders of the free world never did. So what did the West get in return for giving cover to Putin over the past decade and a half? According to Kasparov: “Just like old times, Moscow has become an ally of troublemakers and anti-Democratic rulers around the world. Nuclear aid to Iran, missile technology to North Korea, military equipment to Sudan, Myanmar and Venezuela, making friends with Hamas.” You get the picture.

The bottom line is that Putin’s primary goal is to stay in power. In order to make that happen he needs to foster constant conflict and bitter hatred. This is just one of the reasons why he is such a dangerous player. He also has designs on expanding the Russian empire as evidenced by his invasion of Georgia in 2008 and the blatantly illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014. Kasparov makes a very cogent point when he argues towards the end of the book that "It is long past time to stop listening to Harvard professors and think-tank experts lecture us about what Putin would never do and high time to respond to what he is actually doing." Touche! Whether we are talking about Putin, Al-Qaeda or ISIS it is clear that these forces cannot possibly be defeated without a commitment by Western governments to stand up for freedom and human rights. I had read precious little about Mr. Putin and as such found “Winter Is Coming: Why Vladimir Putin and the Enemies of the Free World must be Stopped” to be a real eye-opener. This is an exceptionally thoughtful and extremely well-written book. It is a "must read" for history buffs and anyone interested in international affairs. Very highly recommended!

A Real Education for Me in the Ways of a Tyrant

Superbly written account of how Russia got to where it is today by a dedicated and famous dissident who has been in the middle of it for a long time. All of this has pretty much been glossed over in the US media in my view. It is truly scary to contemplate what has actually been happening there. Many brave souls have been in the fight to maintain some level of democracy but have unfortunately received little assistance from the West. Some have died for their efforts. It is chilling to contemplate where the Putin mafia will go next. God help us all!

A bit disappointing all round. Lacks any great depth on key topics. The story bounces around at times with diversions that have no relevance to the narrative & add little value. I had hoped for a great deal more given the interesting character that Lloyd is.

MICHAEL ERIC DYSON is one of America’s premier public intellectuals. He occupies the distinguished position of University Professor of Sociology at Georgetown University, is a contributing opinion writer for the New York Times, and is a contributing editor of The New Republic and ESPN’s The Undefeated. Ebony magazine named him one of the 100 Most Influential African Americans and one of the 150 most powerful blacks in the nation.

Unsettling, unnerving. a message we all need to hear...

What does it mean to be black in America? Dyson answers this question in dramatic fashion. Using the clever setup of a sermon, complete with all the parts of a good Baptist message, he relentlessly lays out the harsh reality of being black in this country.

This is a hard book to read, at least if you are white. It made me realize how little I know of the black experience, even though I thought I had a fair amount of knowledge. It made me want to argue with the author on several points, only to find as I read more, I was wrong. I felt, at first, Dyson was too angry in his writing, only to come to realize justifiably so.

At times the message seems repetitious, but then maybe it needs to be for the reader to fully grasp the severity of it. There is a quote from Stephen King on the cover that says, "If you're white, Dyson tells you what you need to know - what this white man needed to know at least." I would add my name to that list.

As I read, I kept asking myself, "Okay, if this is the problem, what am I supposed to do about it?" Dyson answers that question in the section labeled Benediction. Giving the reader concrete steps any of us can follow, which takes this from being just a rant on white privilege to a call to erase the divide between black and white.

What does it mean to be black in America? The question alone makes this a must read.

A Great Sermon!

Everyone in America should read this! We all need it, from the outwardly racist to those who deny being racist, while viewing people of color as less than the perceived white standard. Unfortunately, many have adopted the white standard as the right standard that everyone else is measured and judged by. This is not just a white problem, but a cause for much low self- esteem and lack of self-definition within the black community.
The time has come for all of us to respect and love each other -to look at the content of our character, not the color of our skin as Martin Luther King, Jr. hoped for in America!

Powerful, challenging, and inspiring. An essential read

This is a book that I challenge all my white friends to read, no matter where you stand on the spectrum of confronting white privilege and systemic racism. Michael Eric Dyson delivers a powerful, engaging, personal, informational, inspiring sermon that’s essential at this moment in time when racial division is especially high.

I urge you to read with an open heart and mind, to set aside your discomfort and listen to Dyson’s plea for white Americans to reckon with the harsh truths of racism.

Dyson is an ordained minister, so what better way to present this than as a sermon. He divides it into multiple sections: in “Hymns of Praise,” he cleverly shares hymns in the form of rap lyrics; in “Scripture Reading,” he quotes Martin Luther King Jr.; in the main sermon, he addresses whiteness specifically (including white innocence, white fragility, and white privilege) and then segues into a section about what it’s like to be black in America. Following that is “Benediction,” one of my favorite parts: in it he offers practical suggestions for what white people can do to make things better.

The whole thing is incredibly current and topical, with commentary on Black Lives Matter, the recent election and Donald Trump’s rise to power.

For white people who seek to understand more about racism and white privilege in America (and really, that should be all of us), this is the book to read. It was literally written for us.
