This cuckquean gets put in her place - hard!
My boss is much younger than me, and she's very beautiful and hot. She's also very mean. She bullies me every day, even if I work much harder than she does.
When I make the mistake of letting her meet my super hot husband, the inevitable happens: They fall for each other, and she starts treating me even worse than before.
The weird thing is that I kind of like it...
Only then do I realize what I am: A cuckquean.

Hot and intense story with hard cuckqueaning and humiliation!
Standalone story, no cliffhangers.

The Hot Cuckquean Stories is an intense line of hard cuckquean stories with no regard to the cuckquean's self-worth. Filled with blatantly cheating husbands, humiliated wives and young, cruel mistresses, this series is not to be read by sensitive souls.

Could have been much hotter
By Kindle Customer
This is one of the better cuckqueen stories I've read but still could have been much better. Using how much the husband wants the cuckcake as a more subtle but oh so powerful form of humiliation is far superior to over the top humiliations, violence, etc. Also, keeping the cuckqueen straddling the line of jealousy and lust is intense and very erotic.

Good for intermediate Java guy aspiring to be senior
By Sisu
This book hit the sweet spot for me: I had some knowledge of PL/SQL and database concepts already, and would classify myself as an "intermediate" Java developer. I'm almost done with this book, and it has been not only a pleasure to read, but it has really solidified my knowledge of what is important in database design. In a large workgroup setting, there's a tendency to focus on what has been mandated as the database programming API, so I found the author's overview of all major persistence approaches nice, providing some food for thought. I would say the performance tips, which often appear as boxed "Best Practices" throughout the book, are a key good feature of the book. I really like the author's style, which is clear and pragmatic. In the fashion of the famous 80/20 rule, he points out when there are differences in ways of doing things that exist, but don't make *that* much difference. My last observation will sound trivial, but to me it was another thing to like: the book is compact, a little more than half an inch thick, which makes it easy to just take with you whenever there's a bit of predictable downtime (commuting, lunch, etc).

Mixed
By Shane Kirk
I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand I really liked the discussion of persistence models using J2EE. It was a great tutorial on the various options a J2EE developer has when dealing with databases. On the other hand, I'm disappointed that there wasn't more lower level type discussions. I ended the book feeling as if the "best practice" in Java database development is to avoid direct database development altogether and let an application server deal with it for me.

I develop standalone client/server type database applications more than anything else. I very rarely touch an application server. And unfortunately, only 2 or 3 chapters in this book were useful to me. Everything else was application server specific.

If you're doing straight JDBC development, skip this book and go for a pure JDBC book, as you'll not really get anything new or useful here. If you develop web applications, this book is definitely right up your alley.

Points you in the right direction
By Jason
JDO or EJB? JDBC? BMP or CMP? EJB BMP with JDBC and JDO on a RDMS?
Have you ever been caught up in the alphabet soup of Java database programming APIs? Have you ever questioned which approach might be best suited for your particular application? Sure you pride yourself on your skills in crafting some pretty mean EJBs, but is that the best path to head down with your latest project? O'Reilly's new book "Java Database Best Practices" attempts to answer these questions and more.
For such a relatively thin book (267pp), it touches on a wealth of topics vital to the subject at hand. Reese lends his insights concerning database architectures, database design, transaction management, and persistence methods using JDBC, EJB, and JDO. While this isn't intended to be an introductory tome, you are also not expected to be proficient with all these APIs. As such, the latter third of the book contains tutorials on relevant J2EE APIs, JDBC, JDO, and SQL.
Reese does not exhaustively go into detail on every topic, each of which could probably warrant its own book. Rather he arms us with just enough information to make informed decisions about which method might best serve our applications. Aside from merely determining which set of APIs might be best suited in a given situation, Reese also points out several "best practices" to help guide us in design and implementation (for example, "use join tables to model many-to-many relationships").
I do have a couple of small complaints about the book. For one, "best practices" are highlighted throughout the text, but they are not enumerated or indexed in any manner. An enumerated list of these "best practices" would be welcome. Secondly, MVC purists will likely cringe at the JSP examples. While the architecture shown (JSPs as view and control, database access through taglibs) may be valid for small web applications, I don't feel it should be highlighted as a "best practice", particularly for enterprise applications. None of these complaints are major however, and do not overly detract from the value of the book.
"Java Database Best Practices" accomplishes what it sets out to do. This is a book that might be handy to have to pass around your development team in the design phase to get you all on the same page when making some critical choices. This book could also well serve those, such as managers perhaps, seeking a broad survey of Java database programming. I also feel that this book would make an excellent companion text for a college database programming course using Java. While "Java Database Best Practices" won't make you an expert with all of these APIs, it will certainly point you in the right direction.

Taylor Camp (Revised Edition), by John Wehrheim

Features photographs from the Seventies that reveal a community that rejected consumerism for the healing power of Nature, while the story of Taylor Camp's seven-year existence is documented through interviews made thirty years later with the campers, their neighbours and the Kauai officials who finally evicted them. In 1969 Howard Taylor, brother of Elizabeth, bailed out a rag-tag band of thirteen young Mainlanders jailed on Kauai for vagrancy and invited them to camp on his oceanfront land. Soon waves of hippies, surfers and troubled Vietnam vets found their way there.

Review
TAYLOR CAMP is a brilliant job, lovely to look at, a joy to read...a true book, accurate history, with a human face, and the last word on this amazing episode of joyful 60's and 70's spontaneity. --Paul Theroux

About the Author
Sent to Hawaii by the Sierra Club in 1969, John Wehrheim did a series of articles entitled 'Paradise Lost'; and never went back to the Mainland. He began photographing Taylor Camp in 1971; after 2 years living with both refugees and villagers in Asia, John began to seriously document this tree-house community, seeing it as both a traditional village and refugee settlement - a hippie refuges camp next to a crystalline stream in a tropical forest along a beach in Paradise Photographer, writer and filmmaker, John lives on Kauai with his wife and daughter. His most recent film is also called TAYLOR CAMP.

A magical place and time we all wish could have experienced
By dharmasurfer
A perfect beauty of a book with fine art photographs and a true-to-what-really-happened-look at life in that magical wrinkle in time and space that was Taylor Camp, a tribal village of Hippies in Hawaii in the 1970s. It's a journey to the end of the road on the most remote and lush Hawaiian island, told by those that lived there, on the beach, on a stream, in the jungle in their treehouses.
This is a book to pass down to your children and grandchildren so that they never forget that for one brief shining moment, long ago when we were young, all things were possible. Taylor Camp

Paradise's cost?
By John L Murphy
"Exotic locations with beautiful women" accurately captures much but not all of the charm of this handsome study. John Wehrheim's skillful black-and-white photography from the early 70s conveys the light and warmth he enjoyed on the North Shore of Kaua'i. Here, Elizabeth Taylor's brother Howard gave land to thirteen feckless hippies who'd been the harbinger of what would change that island from a sleepy place in the sunset of the plantation era of sugarcane and pineapple into today's tourist and surfing mecca--witness pricy Princeville near the setting of the seven cleared acres known as Taylor Camp near Hanalei Bay, on the site of an old Hawaiian settlement of taro groves and graves.

Taylor gave it out of spite (the county wanted the land for a park) to the campers, who had been jailed after settling in a another island park. They were very young mainlanders, often from California, often well-off, and in March 1969, they took possession. They tried to go native: treehouses, plastic sheeting, and a beachfront property. Food stamps, a garden, and cultivation of "pakalolo" (the last endearing them to a few otherwise wary locals) sufficed. An eclectic chapel, happily naked parents and kids cavorting on the sands, many smiles--these fill the pages along with recollections of the residents, decades later. I was impressed how satisfied and healthy, given what I reckoned would be conditions of squalor and sloth, they look.

Then, as Liz visited, the puka shell craze began, and Surfer Magazine featured the shore on a cover and lavish page spread, the idyll ended. At its height, three hundred hippies and other wanderers and beach-bums flocked to a place too fragile to endure. In 1977, the state ordered Sam Lee to burn the camp, after evictions, although all left without resistance. The people are still waiting for their park on the site of the camp, even as other areas nearby get snapped up for development of condos and second homes. Let's hope it stays in the public domain.

And, as the mini-essays appended to the photos document (there's also a DVD released separately in 2008), the sunny smiles portrayed over and over in this well-designed book did not endure for all the campers. The jungle hid its own secrets among the treehouses by the end of the road. While many who came there to stay for a while or forever testify movingly, paradise's costs took their toll. Those raised there relate the difficulty of growing up so quickly, where few outsiders had attended school or were accepted, and among the counter-cultural mores and casual relationships that tended to be the Camp lifestyle.

Suzanne "Bobo" Bollin, one of many examples, typifies the profile. She left San Diego after run-ins with the police over pot. She jumped probation and fled with her girls to Kaua'i. She partied, she indulged, and she inhaled. Yet she bemoans the changes that her own arrival accelerated: "Go watch the sunset. People are getting so far away from what God wants us to do, we really need to get back to nature, and I am hoping that this book will help people do that."

Vietnam sent some there for peace--Calvin Kuamo'o tells his story, raised on the Big Island, fighting as an Asian for America, coming back from hell; "Taylor Camp gave me heaven." Spirituality, sexuality, and a lack of materialism attracted many to the allure of this unfrequented hideaway. Many stayed, one reason the population is three times that in 1969 on the island. Most of those interviewed reside somewhere throughout Hawai'i, although some--showing the changes once upon a time--had left the Camp for the Big Island as back then land was cheaper. D. Keakealani Ham Young describes conflicts between incomers and locals, how those around the Camp tended to keep their distance.

Many islanders tell of the passing of the old ways, the loss of respect for land passed down, as newcomers rushed in. They themselves often defend the island they have adopted: they respect the customs that their own enthusiastic presence has complicated by the entry of so many from elsewhere. Now, many whose roots are in the islands cannot afford to stay where their families raised them--I think of some of my own dorm mates back in college who had left O'ahu to study in L.A. I teach a few students now, in Southern California, who have since left that "rock" for the mainland, to find work and an affordable home.

John Wehrheim himself came to the islands in 1969, and married into a local family; his wife became mayor of the County of Kaua'i. Her opponent, also interviewed, lobbied for the hotels and houses that now dominate some of the island; she had wanted more farming. You can judge the results yourself.

His portrait, fair-minded and elegiac, begins with his deft survey of the squabbles and idealism that infused the Camp. His photos arrange towards "mauka" inland moving up from "makai," as he follows the pattern of sea to mountain. He shows us the residents living there near the end of the commune, 1976 or so in the village, as if on a guided tour. Photos and quotes comprise the main section. This then introduces the essays, from those who watched, battled, supported, and became Taylor Camp. The results stand as an eloquent picture of the hippie dream before it faded into the darkening ocean at twilight.

Taylor Camp book review
By floridarunner
I am nearly finished with this book - but am reviewing early - if you are interested in Taylor Camp at all - you will LOVE this book. The first half of the book are original pix taken during the time of Taylor Camp with interviews and perspectives during that time... but what makes this book so special is the second half with the interviews of the persons in the book NOW - they look back on their time at Taylor Camp and you get a new perspective from those that actually experienced it or just lived in Kauai - and what that view of the Taylor Camp lifestyle and impact to Kauai was like.... It is soooo interesting - and have just come back from two weeks on the island - exploring and loving every bit of it - I couldn't help but be fascinated by this time in history - like no other. Anyways - if you like learning about a time and place during our country's history - the 60's and 70's and how the Vietnam war and other social issues affected many of the youth of our country - read this book .... lots of emotions - good and bad.... a very interesting read for sure.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Mari, child of a Moon Woman, is also secretly the daughter of a man from the enemy Tree Tribes. If the Clan knew her secret, they would kill her, so Mari's mother keeps her disguised and teaches her how to channel the moon in order to heal. Nik, heir of the Tree Tribes' Sun Priest, is on a desperate quest to find a missing Companion canine when he sees a girl, who appears to be from the Moon Clan, channeling the sun. How can it be? Their paths cross again when, after Nik is injured in a scavenging raid, Mari pulls him from the river and heals him. Nik knows her skills could save the Tribe from the deadly Blight, but will he be able to convince her to help when the Tribe has so many of the Moon Clan enslaved? The two groups will be forced to work together if they are to escape the looming threat posed by the deadly Skin Stealers—but there's no precedent for it and no guarantee Nik and Mari will be able to convince the others before it's too late. While many fantasy series style themselves as epic, this one may actually be worthy of the description. The thoughtful pace, careful world-building, and inference skills it demands of readers render it best for older teens. VERDICT Fantasy lovers who are fans of Cinda Williams Chima's "Seven Realms" novels will fall in love with Mari and Nik.—Elizabeth Friend, Wester Middle School, TX

A great read, I'll be waiting for the next one!
By Special K
It took me a little while to really get into this book, but once I did it was a great read! I love a good thick book and this one delivered a great story that was different from any other book I've read. I like this post-apocalyptic tale and I am looking forward to reading the next book to see what is in store for the star-crossed main characters and their friends. This book also has the prettiest cover I have ever seen, the colors are amazing.

Great book
By jennifer Hiatt
Love pretty much all of this Author's books, this books pace was fast enough to maintain interest easily. I didn't put it down for 2 days reading and rereading to catch details I missed. The characters are well written and easy to relate to on many levels, love the strong women in this book! I absolutely cannot wait to see what's next! I think the development of the different tribes and clans and their interactions with each other... their prejudices and assumptions about each other are sadly similar to the realities we all live in daily. The storyline kept me guessing throughout and shocked and surprised me often. Found myself imagining this world P.C. Cast has created and marveling at the beauty described, the drawings were a neat touch as well, helping to fully paint the picture the words created.

Keep them coming P.C. Cast! Please!

Another obsession series from PC Cast
By Kasey Dog Trainer
Although the story started a bit slow and there were lots of moving parts that needed to be explained as the story develops this was a great base for another series of books that I will devour as soon as they are available. Clan of the cave bear meets post apocalyptic world - a new beginning through an end.

About the Author
In 2011 I'm finishing my Australian Research Council (ARC) funded project on Touch and New Technologies by completing several pieces of work:  a monograph, provisionally titled Touching Technologies; a special issue of the journal Social Semiotics on Touch; a photo-essay based on my exhibition, The Sense of Touch; an essay on Touch and the Archive; and an extended essay on Ron Mueck's sculpture.
The Social Semiotics issue features work from researchers in a range of fields including education, museology, sound art, experimental psychology, marketing, and cultural studies - and will be an exciting synergistic read!
I'm also working on a new ARC-funded project about Australian writer and socialist, Jack Lindsay - and have made some extraordinary archival discoveries!  I hope to write about these very soon too!

Review
This collection brings together ten retold fairytales by such talented authors as Julia Talbot, Catherynne Valente and Erzebet YellowBoy. Each one offers a new take on old favorites like The Pied Piper of Hamlin and Cinderella, all redone with a lesbian twist. The Little Mermaid and Cinderella find each other, leaving Prince Charming to his own devices. Sleeping Beauty finds a new true love and the tale a new Beauty. A princess in a tower is rescued by a mysterious horseman who is more than he seems.

Not all the stories are romantic. Death and violence appear, just like they did in the original tales. The haunting and disturbing ''Bones Like Black Sugar'' has Gretel fleeing her boorish brother to return to the witch's house and dream her alive. ''Voce'' gives us two young women separated by abuse and jealousy, one blessed with gold with every word she utters, the other cursed with toads whenever she speaks.

But despite the obstacles, each heroine finds her voice and her way, and often, her true love. Sleeping Beauty, Indeed is a must read for everyone who ever rewrote the old stories in her head, searching for nuance and subtext. It is long past time that we had fairytales written about and for ourselves.

From the Publisher
This anthology was originally released as an e-book in 2006. It contains "Voce" by Kimberly DeCina, which was a finalist for the Gaylactic Spectrum Award.

A nice collection of stories...
By Adam Bourke
"Sleeping Beauty, Indeed" is a book of fairy tales, with the exception that the "Damsels in Distress" are into women rather than men. Some of them are original stories, and others are lesbian versions of traditional fairytales. The idea intrigued me, which is why I decided to read/review it, and I'm glad I did, as two of the stories really left an impression on me. Also, it had the rather pleasant mild scent of apples.

1: Two Sisters by R. Holsen (Rating 2/10)
I didn't feel like I properly understood this one. It was written in the first person in the girl's local dialect, which I felt was a bit of a jarring one to start off with. But the main problem I had was that I'm not sure how it really fitted in with the theme of the book. It had lesbians in, although to be honest, it took me a while to realise that, I thought they were sisters, but i'm not sure how it was related to fairytales. If it's a retelling, then I had never heard the original I guess. It wasn't a bad story, but it seems to just be a romance, rather than a fairy tale. Fortunately, the rest of the stories were much more clearly linked to fairy tales.

2: Bones Like Black Sugar by Catherynne M. Valente (Rating: 5/10)
I enjoyed this very short story - but it was really weird. It's essentially about Gretel after the events of the original fairy tale. The woman she likes is the witch from the gingerbread house - who is of course, dead. You might think "Oh, she comes back from the dead?". No. This story verges on necrophilia. But there is some quite vivid description, which makes up for that. Right?

3: The Mute Princess by A.J.Grant (Rating 10/10)
Based on the fairytale of the same name, this story is the one that reads most like a fairytale. I've never actually heard the original fairytale, so this lesbian version will remain with me. The writing is the simple fairy-tale style, characters called "The King", "The Queen", "The Princess" etc, and could easily have been passed down for generations. It's a nice read, and one I wouldn't hesitate to read to children. I think this one really captures the spirit of what I think the book is about, and it's easily my favourite in the book.

4: The Seduction and Secret Life of Deirdre Fallon by Fran Fadella (Rating 10/10)
This is the second of the two stories that left a lasting impression on me. It's the only one in the book which is erotica, and it's written in letter/diary form. To me, both of these things suggested that it wouldn't be amongst the highest quality writing that I've read. I'm happy to say that I was wrong. This story managed to stir emotions in me to the point I wasn't entirely sure they weren't my own. Not a lot of writing can achieve that, and I've never encountered it in short stories before. This was an incredible story, and although it ended a bit quickly, It was to me, the best story in the book (although not my favourite, because it was more of a Faerie story than a fairy tale). The emotions were before the erotica part of the story, but that was actually done well too, which kind of surprised me.

5: Sleeping Beauty, Indeed by Regan M. Wann (Rating 6/10)
At first I wasn't sure about this one. Thie first page had me thinking negative thoughts about it, which continued for maybe two pages, before I started to enjoy it more. as the title would suggest, it's a retelling of sleeping beauty - except instead of pricking her finger, she pricks her hymen. This is discussed in the first couple of paragraphs, and kind of put me off. But when it tells it in more detail, it's better than it sounds. The twist at the end was unexpected, and overall, the story wasn't as bad as I had first thought it would be.

6: Future Fortunes by Kori Aguirre-Amador (Rating 4/10)
One of the longer stories, 'Future Fortunes' was interesting, but not particularly outstanding. The "twist" was quite predictable, and the fact that the prince had been promised the princess' hand was quite confusing, as the king apparently didn't want her to be touched by any man. Also, I was confused as to whether the prophecy said "she WILL not be touched by man" or "she MUST not be touched by man", as the king seems to think the latter, and takes preventative measures, and the princess assumes the former, as she just thinks fate will save her. Overall, not one of the best - although it did seem more like a fary tale than some of the others.

7: Undertow by Meredith Schwartz (Rating 7/10)
This was probably the most interesting idea of all the stories. It combines Cinderella and the Little Mermaid in that the prince from both fairytales is the same man. You can probably guess who ends up with who, but it's quite a sad story, and possibly the second most emotional in the book. I quite liked this one.

8: Voce by Kimberly DeCina (Rating 4/10)
This one dragged on a bit. It's about a mother and daughter, and a Trader and his daughter. The mother and Trader get married, and the two daughters find each other attractive. But the mother is a bit of a weird character, and for some reason seems to hate the trader's daughter. And maybe the trader too, I'm not really sure. I got quite confused in this one, and then the "fay folk" seemed to be a random addition to make it fit in the "fairly tale" category. Bits of it were nice to read, but it took a while to get through it.

9: Bird's Eye by Erzebet YellowBoy (Rating 9/10)
This was an interesting retelling of rapunzel - kind of. It's not about the hair, but she is trapped in a tower. It's a short story, but nicely written, with a quite unexpected ending. It's hard to say anything about it without spoilers, so I'll just move on to the last story.

10: Coyote Kate of Camden by Julia Talbot (Rating 5/10)
This one is based on the Pied Piper. Except instead of rats, it's coyotes. And there isn't so much emphasis on the music. I felt a little let down by this one, as it had little depth, but a bit more depth than your standard fairy tale. But again, it's a nice story, but average.

Overall, it was a nice selection of stories, despite the fact that a few of them weren't very fairy tale-y. The two stories that I rated 10/10 were extremely good, although quite different, and along with Bird's Eye, I would say that they the book is worth considering for them alone. There were few things I didn't like about the book as a whole, so the editor has done well there - except the font choice. It appears to be normal, but every time the combination "ct" appears, something curly happens to the 't', which was quite annoying. But as with most formatting issues, I quickly got over that, and found the book to be quite enjoyable.

Spellbinding!
By AnnaPhase
I love this book; I've read it through six times now! The short stories in this collection are all compelling, in unique ways. Some are old tales written in a new vision, while others are brand new creations by talented writers. I bring this book with me whenever I travel, so I can read and re-read the lovely stories told within its pages. As a lesbian, it's hard to find stories and books written just for me, that aren't trashy or immature. Sleeping Beauty, Indeed finally gave me that which I've been craving for years. You'd be hard pressed to find other lesbian fairytales as enchanting as these.

Hewitt Anderson's Great Big Life, by Jerdine Nolen

Young Hewitt Anderson is sweet, smart, polite—and very, very small. This warmly humorous tale is “proof that, when it comes to heart, physical size isn’t the whole story” (Kirkus Reviews).

Descended from a long line of giants, the J. Carver Worthington Andersons take their height very seriously indeed. You see, without exception all of the many J. Carver Worthington Andersons have been giants until now. And poor Hewitt—hidden in the floorboards, trapped in the flour vat, lost in the bedsheets—has his struggles being tiny. Oh, his parents worry: How will their son manage to live in a world of big things? Leave it to Hewitt to prove the power of being small.

Inspired by the tale of “Jack and the Beanstalk,” the inimitable Jerdine Nolen tells an original story of bravery and the power of the individual. Kadir Nelson’s imaginative and loving illustrations create a world where smallness rules—a world that children will want to return to again and again.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3–Hewitt Anderson is a normal-sized boy born into a family of giants who firmly believe that bigger is better. At the age of seven, their son is so tiny that his anxious parents consult doctors and specialists from all over the world. When none of them can explain "the circumstances surrounding Hewitt's small and unimposing stature," the loving parents formulate some lessons in survival for the boy. However, it is the little guy himself who ends up helping them survive the lessons. They are constantly amazed at Hewitt's resourcefulness and talents and finally realize that rather than worrying so much about his size, they should recognize that he is perfect just the way he is–something that the youngster already knows. Nelson's funny, larger-than-life oil paintings warmly depict this African-American family and give readers a real sense of gigantic proportions. They are visions of contrasts in size. On one page Hewitt stands on the mantle looking at family photographs. He is half the size of the smallest frame. In other pictures, he is curled up fast asleep in the center of his father's hand, or riding on the brim of his mother's bonnet. Told in colorful language that begs to be read aloud, this humorous, oversize book offers a gentle look at accepting others as they are.–Mary N. Oluonye, Shaker Heights Public Library, OH

Review
Low on suspense but high on sheer feel-goodness, this Tom Thumb-like original tale will elicit sighs of content from readers and listeners needing a change of pace. Born to adoring, humongous parents, tiny Hewitt sometimes does get lost in his immense bed, or have to dive between the floorboards to avoid a passing broom. Still, not only do the good times far outnumber the chancy ones, but his size comes in downright handy when, for instance, his father carries him up a towering beanstalk, then turns out to be afraid of heights, or his parents lock themselves in the treasure house. Nelson's burly, monumental, brown-skinned giants positively glow with beneficence, and Nolen writes, as always, with a distinctive mix of humor and formality: Listening to his parents sing "made Hewitt's liver quiver and tickled his funny bone right down to his shoes." Here's proof that, when it comes to heart, physical size isn't the whole story. (Picture book. 6-8) (Kirkus Reviews)

Make The Best Out Of Your Shortcomings
By C. Curran
The book is about an extremly small boy, Hewitt Anderson, who was born to a family of giants. He is so small that at the age of five he fits into the palm of his fathers hand. At first his parents are very worried about Hewitt becasue of his small stature and do everything they can to try to make him bigger, including calling in expert doctors, but to no avail. Hewitts parents realized that all they could do was accept Hewitt as his is and make the best of things.

Even though it bothered Hewitts parents that he was small, it never seemed to bother Hewitt. In fact he would make the best of everything.for example:

"The feather mattress and pillow were fun for plopping down upon. The tassels on the bedposts were just right for climbing. When Hewitt got lost in his blankets, he pretended he was on a mining expedition. To Hewitt the world was big and wonderful and wide."

Of course all the items mentioned above were made for giants not for someone the size of a mouse.

Anyway, it ends up there were times that the giants, as big as they were, needed Hewitts help. For example his parents and a doctor were accidently locked in a room and couldn't get out. So it was Hewitt to the rescue. The books states:

"What would become of them? Would they ever be found? My roast is in the oven? cried Mres. Anderson worriedly.

Then Hewitt had an idea. Because he was so small, he managed to climb into the kehole, maneuver through the weights and gears to tun the tumbles to the lock, and set them all free. Once again it was up to Hewitt to save his parents-and now the good doctor, too. And as always, Hewitt came through."

Needless to say that his parents realized that even though Hewitt was so small that they needn't worry about him because Hewitt would use his "shortcomings" to survive. The books ends with the following passage:

"Now his parents understood. Hewitt did indeed know how to live among gigantic things. And because he was small, Hewitt was just as he should be. For his parents realized that big or small, either is best of all! And they could not have been more proud of Hewitt or loved him any more."

This book would be great to open up a dialogue between child and adult to discuss a child's "shortcomings" and discuss ways to over come them their own unique obstacles. I do want to mention that the illustrations were fantastic too and that this book is for an older child, like 8 and up. Might be hard for a younger child to comprehend because it is very wordy.

Love this book
By mcc2133
My daughter & I really enjoy this book. Not only is it fun (and Kadir Nelson, as always, does not dissapoint with his illustrations), but the message comes through clearly. It doesn't matter if you are different, we each have our own unique giftings & abilities that are valuable. Not to mention the unconditional love between the child & parents. Beautiful book you will want to read over & over.

Big Shoes to Fill
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers
Have you ever felt like a little person amid a group of giants? This was Hewitt Anderson's everyday existence in the book HEWITT ANDERSON'S GREAT BIG LIFE. His parents, descendents of a long line of giants, have lived their life with the belief that bigger is always better. So when their son was born tiny and didn't seem to grow, they were so concerned that they took him for medical evaluations. Yet, they loved their son unconditionally and did all they could to ensure he could survive as a little person in a great big world. In the process, they all learned to appreciate Hewitt's unique talents and abilities.

Loosely inspired by the fairy tale Jack in the Beanstalk, this book was a lot of fun to read. The author has penned a story that implicitly reminds children that it is okay to be different. The warm, inviting illustrations are detailed enough to hold a child's interest and further draw them into this gargantuan story. However, word count and vocabulary may be a little too difficult for very young children to read without assistance. This book is so much more than a mere retelling of a classic fairy tale with black characters, it is a story destined to be a classic on its own merits.
