I've used and enjoyed this series for years. gave this to my 15 yr old niece who was going on a great London adventure. she was underwhelmed. probably the wrong age group - she was not in charge of decisions on this trip and who reads books made of paper anyway? everything they want to know is online. sigh. was hoping this would spark less pedestrian agendas but alas, on your first trip to London, the Must must be done... however I hope she can now appreciate the book and use it on her next visit.

Oscar Wilde, who wrote most memorably of "beautiful untrue things," he's not. But in two or three worthy poems in his 10th collection, Feldman passes for Shelly Berman, Don Rickles or Albert Brooks, a comic talent hellbent on sentiment. Mean-spirited misfires nearly sink the book: two disgruntled memoirs of Paul Goodman ("The slugger doesn't hit on the batboy" from "Lives of the Poets"), a fungal series of satire-lets ("How can sharing bread not be true companionship?/ When a shit-eater has you dine from his dish") and a murkily critical reading of poet laureate Robert Pinsky's translation of Dante's Inferno. Feldman's better when practicing self-deprecation without simultaneously trying to even a score, as in the resolutely academic, "Oedipus Host" and "Funny Bones, or Larry Dawn's 1001 Nights in Condolandia." While his talk-show version of Oedipus at Colonus (tonight's guests: Job and Lear) isn't much wittier a concept than one of the less successful Saturday Night Live sketches, he gets points for sheer weirdness and joy at the apotheosis: "Suddenly, this big smile. It's like teeth can see." And that Larry Dawn is supposed to be a cross between Lazarus and Scheherezade somehow doesn't get in the way of the oomph of its gallows schtick. It's too bad the book doesn't make more use of the title character of the best poem here, "Heavenly Muse."

As usual, the prose and the man

defy description. To know even slightly of either is to learn a new way to read, a closer way of listening. To learn to know a little of the laughing game through the veil of pain which is possible and too probable in life, a way of preserving the candle the twelfth hour and beyond, because communication exists. And always. I highly recommend this, as all his works, as a devotional to worldkind in general, and to the singular reader in particular. Enjoy the gift.

Unique nature guide

This handbook is unlike any other nature guide, instead of the usual book which is limited to a single aspect of nature, Ernest Williams has collected 227 descriptions of his observations in the field over the past several decades. The topics are wide ranging, with five general themes: relationship of size and shape, adaptations, distributional patterns, behavior and diverstiy of life. It is organized in three chapters: plants, animals and habitats. The topics are interesting little morsels, 1-2 pages each, illustrated by 500 excellent photos. It makes great bedside or bathroom reading! But I read most of the book on a day of travel. This will be a great addition to any nature observer's library.

Original, intelligent, entertaining approach to nature writing

A first-rate, fun, informative, beautifully designed book.

Long version:
It seems difficult to find books about the life sciences written for a general audience that are both substantive and fun to read. I often come home from a walk or a hike (or a movie) wanting to read more about what I just saw. But much nature writing seems to be either overly abstract, philosophical, and memoir-y -- or set up like a catalog, with small square pictures next to small square descriptions of individual animals or plants without any explanation of how they relate to each other. I start out all excited to learn something, and before I know it I'm overwhelmed and bored.

This book, on the other hand, has engaging short discussions of major themes (protective coloration, nest design, sand dune formation) with a good mix of abstract (how a process works) and concrete (examples from the plant or animal world). It has the kind of fun factoids you like to tell your friends (how many earthworms are crawling around the average acre of land, why animals' eyes glow in the dark). The photos are small enough to keep the price down but large enough to be attractive, and each is well chosen to illustrate a point in the text.

Above all, the book focuses on the interactions *between* species (for example, sea otters, kelp, and sea urchins) rather than listing each species as if it were a vase standing alone on a shelf in a museum. It is divided into three sections: plants, animals, and habitats. Details are judiciously chosen to keep the picture manageable for the beginner or lay person. I've never seen a book structured quite this way, and I thought it was a fantastic format for introducing complex subject matter to a general audience. It's not at all sentimental and it doesn't push a point of view on you, but it leaves you with a sense of the magnificence of nature. Three cheers. Well done.

Encouraging in Tone, Brilliant in Execution: The Best.

Mr. Sieger's book, Natural Born Winners, is the most applicable self-development book currently available. As applicability is the most important quality of any book in this genre, NBW must also qualify as a candidate for Best Self Development Book Ever.

Sieger begins with a brief memoir then smoothly transitions his life lessons into principles from which we can all learn. The transition happens early, carefully keeping the book's focus on the reader. Robin maintains a caring & encouraging tone throughout; he wants you to grow, to realize your full potential. NBW is stuffed full of engaging quotes and anecdotes, all neatly laid out; creating a personal development safari as anchored by a seasoned guide. The book's pace is torrid, it's three hundred pages can be read in a couple of days. NBW is also wonderful as a reference, it's steps for realization are well segmented and an ease to locate.

With this revised edition of NBW, Sieger should no doubt be listed alongside Napoleon Hill and Earl Nightingale as the best writers of the genre. I highly recommend discovering what it is to be a Natural Born Winner.

ambitious 14 yr old girl

My dad actually bought this book (he read it before me) and i decided to pick it up for myself and read it...I haven't finished it yet, but I'm about halfway through and it's really good. It really makes you believe you can do anything with just a few extremely basic, simple, easy principles. How could I not think of it before? Basically, this is some of the stuff your parents and educators have told you to do your whole life ("believe in yourself", etc.) but the author puts it in an understandable, easy-to-read format that makes you think, "Wow this is all I need to know. I really should be doing this." and he really proves his point really well by giving great explanations, examples, and inspiring anecdotes along the way. And everything just makes sense!! There isn't really a word to describe it, but really anyone, no matter the age (but since I am younger and have my whole life to think about, this became a real inspiration to me). I recommend this. I just can't get over it...IT'S ALL SO SIMPLE!!

Its all in the mind

This book continues to be a support for me. I have read it a few times now, each time when I feel down, useless, de-motivated and just a waist of life, and each time it has picked me up, made me dust the cobwebs of self doubt and negativity away replacing them with a feeling of renewed power, enthusiasm and happiness. Success is within all of us as Robin says "it all starts in our minds". All the best on your own journey to becoming a success!

Knifty models confusingly presented

That rating is really 3 1/2 stars, because the book is better than just average. It may look slim, but it's chock-full of several models in each of many families of modules. Not hours, but weeks of fun (not to mention a lot of paper squares).
The problem is the presentation. Many models are hard to follow, especially when trying to put them together; more than once, I had to refer to another book to figure out what to do. Some diagrams are confusing, if not outright wrong (3-dimensional pictures are especially prone to this). Occasionally instructions are alluded to (e.g., in captions) that aren't there. There's a complete absence of cross-references between illustrative photos and instructions for folding them.
In short, a frustrating book. If the good parts weren't so good, it wouldn't be quite so frustrating.

Terrible...even for an experienced folder

I have been doing origami for about 10 years, and have had great success with modular origami (mostly from "Unit Origami" by Tomoko Fuse). This book has diagrams that are hard to understand, the colored side of the paper is not even marked so it's very difficult to know if you are folding correctly. There are no written instructions, only the bad diagrams and I could not make a single model from this book. Even the few photos of the completed models were in black and white and not very good photos at all. I would recommend Fuse's book or another modular origami book with better diagrams. For those that have had success with models from this book, congratulations, but even with my usual vast amount of patience it did not take long for me to throw this book across the room in frustration. However, I will say that the models are very unique and beatiful and if you can do them, they should be very satisfying. I am copying this same review for "3-d Geometric Origami" by Gurkewitz and Arnstein, for I felt the same was true of that book.

Beautiful Models for Expert Folders

This book bursts with stunning models of various polyhedra. The directions, and models, are harder than in "Modelar Origami Polyhedra." The book opens with a nicely detailed section of polyhedra facts, including the numbers of edges, corders, face shapes and category of each shape, along with a definition of Platonic solids. For the non-mathematician, this information provides a nice grounding in polyhedra. The directions for each module are complicated yet clear. Occasionally the lack of color in the book proves a bit frustrating, but patience and double-checking can bypass that nitpicky problem. The one thing this book does not provide is guidance about connecting all of the modules. That is when authorial reassurance is most required! Nevertheless, this book will provide hours of pleasure for those with patience and nimble fingers.
