This book is a psycho-spiritual revelation of contemporary insights into ancient truths, specifically the "Mystery School", a theme which has been repeated through history in many cultures and civilizations.
This book is rich in deeply meaningful wisdom woven into a modern tale of layered dynamics and a wealth of colorful metaphors and analogies that return the reader/listener to the "state of grace" worthy of a spiritual classic

The characters are powerful "archetypes" of human nature .

Another Chopra Wake Up Call

The 13th Disciple, about a contemporary Mystery School, might be part of a genre called New Age Spiritual Mysticism. And Dr. Chopra is right to place this in his pantheon of publications because if spirituality is not connected to everyday life, it’s meaningless. These contemporary fictional characters aren’t psychologically deep but deep enough to carry a spiritual plot. Many readers will know actual people like Mare, Frank, Jimmy, Galen, and Lilith which is what makes the reading fun.

Perhaps more compelling to longtime Chopra readers is the book’s afterword called The Mystery and You. Don’t skip it because once again the light (awareness) comes shining through. You’ll find out why Chopra has a special interest in writing about Christianity. It’s a revelation that many of us have long shared about the teachings of Christ. I’m renewing my search for a Mystery School here in Washington, DC.

The Light of Truth.

In perfect timing Deepak Chopra presents the possibility of a Renaisance in the Contemplative Traditions through this marvellous spiritual tale.
The 13th Disciple invites us to shine the light of truth on our core assumptions. Some will go kicking and screaming in defiance but in the end "resistance is useless"!
Such an understated quote "You're someone with possibilities only you don't realize it yet", hints at our infinite potential.
In reality I suggest that great ones like Deepak Chopra and Dr B Alan Wallace form an invincible alliance to dispel the prevalent myth of scientific materialism delivering a final, mortal blow to this unsubstantiated falsehood. This would be a great blessing for the world.
I hope you enjoy the 13th Disciple as much as I did and that you too shine the light of truth in your life.

About the Author
Reginald H. Garrett was educated in the Baltimore city public schools and at the Johns Hopkins University, where he received his Ph.D. in biology in 1968. Since that time, he has conducted research and taught biochemistry courses at the University of Virginia, where he is currently Professor of Biology. He is the author of numerous papers and review articles on biochemical, genetic, and molecular biological aspects of inorganic nitrogen metabolism. His early research focused on the pathway of nitrate assimilation in filamentous fungi. His investigations contributed substantially to our understanding of the enzymology, genetics, and regulation of this major pathway of biological nitrogen acquisition. More recently, he has collaborated in systems approaches to the metabolic basis of nutrition-related diseases. His research has been supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and private industry. A member of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Garrett is a former Fulbright Scholar, was twice Visiting Scholar at the University of Cambridge, and was Invited Professor at the University of Toulouse, France.

Charles M. Grisham received his B.S. in chemistry from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1969 and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Minnesota in 1973. Following a postdoctoral appointment at the Institute for Cancer Research in Philadelphia, he became Professor of Chemistry at the University of Virginia, where he teaches biochemistry, introductory chemistry, and physical chemistry. He has authored numerous papers and review articles on active transport of sodium, potassium, and calcium in mammalian systems, on protein kinase C, and on the applications of NMR and EPR spectroscopy to the study of biological systems. His work has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Muscular Dystrophy Association of America, the Research Corporation, the American Heart Association and the American Chemical Society. A member of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Grisham held the Knapp Chair in Chemistry in 1999 at the University of San Diego; was Visiting Scientist at the Aarhus University Institute of Physiology, Aarhus, Denmark, for two years; and received a Research Career Development Award from the National Institutes of Health.

Superb, balanced book.

I took 2 courses in undergraduate biochemistry, and this was the book used. The authors strike a balance between biology (i.e. discussion of regulation and physiology) and chemistry (i.e. reaction mechanisms and structures of proteins). This book is middle-of the line between Voet (hardcore chemistry/structural biology) and Lehninger (physiology/pre-med focus). The illustrations were clear and overall the text was comprehensible. For teaching an undergraduate course in biochemistry, Garrett & Grisham is hard to beat.

A scammed feeling

There are many undesirable issues with this textbook.

First major issue is the fact that it doesn't have example problems that teach the student how to solve problems at the end of the chapters. However, for the price of $45-$100 the student can buy the "solutions manual" which should have already been part of the text. So when purchasing this book, the customer is buying an incomplete textbook.

Second, the examples problems that are present will neglect to explain or show crucial steps in the equations.
Again, more incentive to spend more money on the solutions manual.

Third, issue is that there are typos throughout the book, coincidentally in the example problems and answers to the example problems. There is more confusion and thus incentive to buy the solutions manual. It's very confusing when quantities are mislabled in mili-moles when it should be micro-moles.

Fourth, ball and stick models don't show double and triple bonds in the molecule.

I'm sure they will just make this textbook obsolete with a new edition to correct the typos. Profitable industry where products are not recalled for major mistakes.

In the future, I hope none of my professors will use Cengage textbooks.

A Wonderful Book

This is a wonderful book on many levels, among them the personal relationships, an abiding love of music and, of course, the mechanics of the wonderful instrument called simply "the piano," as well as buying tips. I've read it twice now and found new revelations that escaped me the first time. I highly recommend this wonderful book.

I've been recording for over 30 years divided between analog and digital equally and this book is a good source of general information on both sides. While the information is great it only goes so deep into details, which probably would take an encyclopedia to cover. Nonetheless it is a good reference for general information with very good insight in how to approach many aspects of the music world. A lot of information even for seasoned folks and can refresh some things that we tend to forget. Easy to read and the author breaks it down pretty well. While staying on the side of factual information the author does share his opinions from experience which is also very refreshing.

5* for content and know-how (and Dave is my instructor so this book goes perfectly with my class). The kindle version though has a ton of typos which is somewhat distracting. I'll make sure to let him know as well but I thought I would post this just in case someone else handled the kindle content.

Very Educational

This book is incredibly in-depth, easy to read, and full of great DIY experiments to further explain and experience the concepts. This book will lay the groundwork and build a solid core understanding of the theory and practice of recording audio. It will make the process of learning and trying out the recording process so much easier. Just don't forget to get out there and start using this information.
