This volume is an introduction to the intellectual movement known as Postmodernism and its impact on the visual arts. In clear, jargon-free language, Eleanor Heartney situates Postmodernism historically, showing how it developed both in reaction to and as a result of some of the fundamental beliefs underlying Modernism, especially its positivist, universalizing aspects. She then analyzes paradigmatic Postmodern works of art by artists such as Cindy Sherman, Sherrie Levine, Jeff Koons and Robert Mapplethorpe. Postmodernism provides a concise and articulate overview of the Postmodern phenomenon. Eleanor Heartney is a contributing editor for Art in America, New Art Examiner, and Art Press. In 1991, she was the recipient of the Frank Jewett Mather Award for Distinction in Art Criticism. Heartney is a board member of the American section of the AICA. She is also the author of Critical Condition: American Culture at the Crossroads (Cambridge, 1997). She lives in New York.

Clear, concise but limited
By Luca Graziuso and Marina Ross
Perhaps few words have been as overused and misunderstood in recent times as postmodernism. This book presents a lively, wide-ranging and highly readable exploration of what postmodernism has come to mean in the context of contemporary art.
The postmodern revolution replaced the Modernist faith in universality, authenticity and artistic progress with a world view that turned artworks into texts, history into mythology, the artist into a fictional character, and reality into an outmoded convention. Eleanor Heartley aptly examines the key developments in the history of postmodern art. It includes a discussion of Neo-Expressionism, the "anti-aesthetic" movement, the art of commodity critique, postmodern feminism, and postmodern multiculturalism. In the process she touches on a number of intriguing questions, namely: "What is art without an artist?"; "Why is photography regarded as the quintessential postmodern medium?"; "How did a movement grounded in denunciations of the commodification of art generate one of the most heated art markets in recent history?"...
Postmodernism is well illustrated, mostly with artworks from the Tate Gallery (the general editor is Simon Wilson, a curator at Tate), although not exclusively so. Excellent selections of David Salle, Lorna Simpson, Adrian Piper, Carl Pope, Barbara Kruger, Julian Schnabel, James Rosenquist, Robert Longo, Jeff Koons, Gerhard RIchter, Mary Kelley, Robert Mapplethorpe, Jorg Immendorff, Eric Fischl, Sandro Chia, and Christopher Le Brun.
It should be noted that aside from Cindy Sherman and Krysztof Wodiczko performance art is scarcely treated. Furthermore architecture, from whence postmodernism receives its name and mixed media art which it has increasingly tended towards are absent save for an aside on Philip Johnson's AT&T building. All in all however a fun and accessible introduction that clarifies and sets the stage for more in-depth inquiries into the phenomena of postmodernism.

easy to understand
By hellolily
this book makes the idea of post-modernism very clear. it's a very complicated subject so i feel this book does a good job at making sense. it was assigned for my class called "Art Criticism of the Post-Modern World." My professor is very smart and experienced and recommended this book because he felt it was the best one to explain the idea.
