Its a case of a book thats badly written. Trying to convince all whites are racist. Forget the fact that thousands of farmers have been tortured and murdered post 1994. All this book reminds me as a white person living in South Africa is that they won't stop until all of us are dead or gone, so that they can consume themselves! Perhaps its time to stand up agains reverse rascism........ Please don't buy this book or waste your money. People like Stuart Theobald that gave a 5 star review is a personal friend of Eusebius.... Nothing like rent a crowd

The language used in the book is my biggest problem because it excludes a lot of us who do not have a vast English vocabulary, let alone an academic one. For the importance I feel this book carries, I think the writer should have thought about the limit he was putting on his readership by the complex way he expressed some of his postulations.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Though there are arguments the author makes which I am not convinced by, on the whole McKaiser does a great job of exploring some of the complex race issues that South Africans are grappling with today. McKaiser has a philosopher's grip on argumentative structure, but a radio talk show's grip on narrative story telling. Together it makes for an effective style that is easy to read while challenging our beliefs and prejudices.

For white South Africans (like me) who recognise the massive injustice of the past and the very deep strands of racism that embed in our psychologies, this book is a very helpful, sometimes painful, effort at surgically dislodging them. For less self-reflective readers, that can be an unpleasant experience, as some of the reviews of this book on Amazon demonstrate. McKaiser is completely uncompromising in holding the racist responsible for their racism - but he opens a way out, a way to identify and understand race and the pain it inflicts, and to become part of the solution rather than the problem.

There are many things that are needed to deal with the ongoing harm of racism in South African society. This book is definitely one of them.

Maybe should have remained a legend

I found this book rather dull and not particularily well written. Let's face it, anyone reading this book is looking for information on the Dowager Empress, not Der Ling. Not much information on the Empress (although the information that was provided was good) and too much dull information on Der Ling. I would not recommend the book.

Imperial Masquerade - Grant Hayter-Menzies

Engaging read from start to finish. I saw Mr. Hayter-Menzies do a book presentation and signing at the Freer Gallery at the Smithsonian, bought the book on the spot and read it immediately on the flight back to California. Hard to believe Der Ling not only survived, but thrived in this time period with such a before-her-time, women's rights attitude in Chinese society, not to mention French and American societies where women weren't supposed to be self-sufficient and bold. You could almost credit her with the popularity of compact, personally owned photo image cameras - Kodak should have paid her a commission or marketing fee. I'm also amazed that Der Ling was able to "pose" so readily as "Chinese royalty" and got away with it for so long. The fact that she did "live" the true life of a Chinese Princess within the royal court made her books, lectures and performances accurate, entertaining and believable - so I guess her audiences must have been captivated by her stories. If Bush can pose as a president, why couldn't Der Ling pose as a royal Chinese princess? Absolutely a must-read for anyone interested in Chinese culture and world history in general.

I bought this book, like the Soong Dynasty, in Hong Kong last year, but I actually tackled it this year after coming back from Bejing, where my interest was fueled by a visit to the Summer Palace, the preferred residence of Empress Cixi. Who was Princess Der Ling? This book has many merits, aside from the fact that it is a good read, maybe a little boring in the chapters that deal with Der Ling's permanence at court (but as we can all imagine, court life in China probably wasn't very fun). First of all it is a painting of precise historical periods in all the nations Der Ling visits before and after her stay at court: Tokyo at the beginning of the 20th century, Paris in the 1910's, Shangai and Bejing and finally the USA in the 1940's, since the Hayter Menzies is exceptional at describing the moving forces of these nations and societies especially to issues pertaining to Chinese relationships abroad. Secondly, the description of secondary characters that Der Ling meets in her life is portrait like and references in bibliography are very satisfying : we meet Isadora Duncan, Sarah Bernhardt, Chiang Kai Shek, numerous Chinese politicians, that all jump out of the pages. Thirdly, the cross cultural links among this composite society of China at the beginning of the 20th Century, that was at the same time provincial and international are described in way that makes the reader really understand the forces at play behind the history.
The photographic material is very good and helps to imagine the characters.
Der Ling's personality alone does not satisfy. Somehow I did not manage to "feel" this intriguing and masquerading woman, but maybe, as the Author states in his last chapter, Der Ling did not really know herself.
An enjoyable, historically important and mind opening book. A suggestion: read it together with the Empress Orchid by Ache Min, the Soong Dynasty by Seagrave and Hayter Menzies latest book on the epistolary between Sarah Conger and Cixi.

Since high-end horsepower and low-end torque are mutually exclusive, this book focuses on real-world power: low-end torque.

About the Author
A sea captain by trade, Bill Rook has been hot rodding Harley-Davidson motorcycles since 1972.  Along the way, he's picked up an incomparable base of knowledge from which to build the ultimate high-performance, yet streetable, V-twin engine.  He resides in Seward, Alaska.

Excellent Sportster Engine Book

This was one of the first books I bought when I started modifying my 2002 Sportster. Since then, I've gone on to read Buzzelli, Remus, Hamill and even the out of print books by Denish. Whle each of the books has their positive aspects, I consider Mr. Rook's books to one of the best for 99% of the home mechanics out there. His theory is solid, his explanations are understandable, and I frankly consider his writing style to be outstanding. While a chapter of the book covers magnetos, it is less out dated than a method he uses to explain ignition theory. I have read everything I could on Harley engines and I couldn't imagine finding such a wealth of information just surfing the internet. Since buying the book, I've bought 5 more just to give to friends with Harleys, just to show them what can be done with their engines. As Mr. Rook states in his book, achieving engine power is a series of comromises: a drag bike won't work well in the street and a street bike loses drag races. HIs book is similarly a middle ground between a boring manual and a glossy coffee table book, not boring and not superficial. Far from being outdated, the topics described such as fuel/air ratios, carb modification, and compression theory are both current and correct. As a result of reading his book, I have been able to speak to speed shop mechanics on their level and have successfully designed and built my own modified sportster engine. I have nothing but praise for this book and await his next effort.

Excellent book.

I've been riding and wrenching on HDs for over twenty years and I still found this book useful. It confirmed a lot of opinions I had on building a "street" motor and it gave me new information in other areas. I found that the chapters on camshafts, intake, and exhaust were some of the best I've read and expanded my knowledge of these areas.

If you are into HD motors, you should have this on your bookshelf.
