Author Bill Rook has spent decades perfecting the art of building torque-monster V-twin Harley engines. Here he brings that experience to bear, guiding motorcycle enthusiasts through the modifications that make a bike not just fast but comfortable to ride. With clear, step-by-step instructions, his book shows readers how to get high performance out of their Harleys—and enjoy them, too.

Review

Midnight Sun Rider, Spring 2007

“If you read this book and apply the information it contains you will save many times over the cost of the book.”

Daily Telegraph (NZ), July 1, 2007

“It is a detailed technical guide to getting the most out of your bike.”

From the Back Cover

Harley-Davidson engine expert Bill Rook has spent decades perfecting the art of building torque-monster V-twin Harleys. Rook’s goal always has been to go fast, but also to do so comfortably. Since high-end horsepower and low-end torque are mutually exclusive, this book focuses on real-world power: low-end torque.

Simply stated, torque accelerates your motorcycle to the desired speed: the more torque you have available, the faster you’ll get there. That’s where the real fun is, isn’t it? Torque over a wide rev range is the key to useable street performance.

From intake and exhaust tuning to cam selection, ignition and electrical modification to gearing changes, How To Build a Harley-Davidson Torque Monster explains how to put together a Harley that you can comfortably live with during the day but that will still smoke people at night.

About the Author
A sea captain by trade, Bill Rook has been hot rodding Harley-Davidson motorcycles since 1972.  Along the way, he's picked up an incomparable base of knowledge from which to build the ultimate high-performance, yet streetable, V-twin engine.  He resides in Seward, Alaska.

Excellent Sportster Engine Book
By Jan Trendowski
This was one of the first books I bought when I started modifying my 2002 Sportster. Since then, I've gone on to read Buzzelli, Remus, Hamill and even the out of print books by Denish. Whle each of the books has their positive aspects, I consider Mr. Rook's books to one of the best for 99% of the home mechanics out there. His theory is solid, his explanations are understandable, and I frankly consider his writing style to be outstanding. While a chapter of the book covers magnetos, it is less out dated than a method he uses to explain ignition theory. I have read everything I could on Harley engines and I couldn't imagine finding such a wealth of information just surfing the internet. Since buying the book, I've bought 5 more just to give to friends with Harleys, just to show them what can be done with their engines. As Mr. Rook states in his book, achieving engine power is a series of comromises: a drag bike won't work well in the street and a street bike loses drag races. HIs book is similarly a middle ground between a boring manual and a glossy coffee table book, not boring and not superficial. Far from being outdated, the topics described such as fuel/air ratios, carb modification, and compression theory are both current and correct. As a result of reading his book, I have been able to speak to speed shop mechanics on their level and have successfully designed and built my own modified sportster engine. I have nothing but praise for this book and await his next effort.

Excellent book.
By Kenneth J. Kimble
I've been riding and wrenching on HDs for over twenty years and I still found this book useful. It confirmed a lot of opinions I had on building a "street" motor and it gave me new information in other areas. I found that the chapters on camshafts, intake, and exhaust were some of the best I've read and expanded my knowledge of these areas.

If you are into HD motors, you should have this on your bookshelf.
